News about Star Wars TV series in developement broke this week, with HN Entertainment reporting about the possibility of TV series for a young Princess Leia, Captain Phasma, Rose Tico, the Knights of Ren, and (the legendary) Darth Bane on Monday as well as We Got This Covered writing about Lando and Qi'ra TV series in early developement, and Star Wars News Net following with a report about an Obi-Wan limited series coming to Disney+ on Tuesday. But what do all these rumours mean? Let's break it down.
"Early Developement"
Princess Leia, Captain Phasma, Rose Tico, Kinghts of Ren, Darth Bane, Lando, Qi'ra, etc..... The list goes on and on, taking in earlier reports about Finn and Poe getting a series for example. It is possible all these options are thrown against the wall at LucasFilm right now, but that sure as hell doesn't mean we're going to see all of them happen. I think LucasFilm is working on ideas to publish more material for Disney+ if the streaming service and especially the Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian and Cassian Andor do well. So they are looking into every material they have, develope some scripts or basic story ideas, and then they'll pick one or two projects to actually produce - and these may not even be part of the list above. So I'm pretty sure LucasFilm is working on different ideas (and maybe even looking on social media which of these would have fans on their side), but it is completely unsure what we'll actually see when the time is coming for new TV series.
Obi-Wan
It seems to be a different deal with the Obi-Wan series though. Yes, it is in a similar phase, but the report says it is based on a ready-to-produce script for a movie, thrown aside after the box office desaster of Solo: A Star Wars Story. And everyone knows fans are waiting for Ewan McGregor to reprise his role just as much as Ewan himself is. So this series seems to be a safe bet for LucasFilm, so I think the possibility of this series happening is far higher in my opinion, than the other series listed above. Of course with 2 live-action series already announced, they will not announce anything more before D+ and these series are a success, but since I'm pretty sure they will be very successful indead, I have good hopes on this actually happening. So let's wait one or two years, I'm pretty confident to see this happen.
My opinion
But which of the rumoured/considered TV series would make sense to me?
First of all, I would absolutely love to see one of the greatest characters of all Star Wars, Darth Fucking Bane, back in canon (yes, his existance is canon thanks to The Clone Wars, but that's it). I think the story of the Bane-book-trilogy is far better to adapt through a series than with a film (-trilogy), so this really makes sense to me. Of course LucasFilm would need to bring back Drew Karpyshyn for this, since noone knows the character and his story as well as the author of the book trilogy.
A Qi'ra series would be very intersting too, at least if they bring back Ray Park and Sam Witwer as "Formerly Darth, now just Maul" (to quote himself from Rebels) and - at least for some kind of flashbacks - Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos. Qi'ra herself isn't that interesting to me, but I wan't to know every single bit of Maul's story, and I loved the character of Dryden Vos in Solo, so this would make the series worth watching for me.
For a while now fans are asking for Millie Bobby Brown to play a young Princess Leia. A good part of her story was already covered in a book (I still have to read that to be honest), but that doesn't mean a series about her is impossible and I think she is one of the most fascinating characters Star Wars has to offer, so I would absolutely love to see more on her.
Donald Glover was one of the best parts of Solo, so it was pretty clear LucasFilm would consider working on with him as Lando. I think a series about a pre-Solo Lando could be worth watching simply for Glover, but I would not be that super hyped for this as for the ones above.
And for the rest, I honestly think they should not go into production. The Knights Of Ren aren't more than a short mention (at least for now), Rose is probably the most-hated character in all Star Wars (and let's be honest, "saving what we love" doesn't win you a war when it is almost certain that saving one person means killing everyone else fighting with you), and Captain Phasma is an even more boring and disappointing character than Boba Fett (in the movies he really is a lame character, TCW and Legends made him far better). I just do not need more material on any of them.
